if your device is ipad2/3 or iphone4/4s, you can use airplay mirroring, not file format limit.
please refer to viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8976
if your device is other models, you can only airplay native media format to apple tv with quicktime plugin.

Hm... why doesn't AirPlayer send video to AirPlay? I just downloaded *Player and AirPlay works from there with all movies/devices. I like the AirPlayer UI better, so I'd rather stay with it, but

AirPlay mirroring is not a solution, because
a) I don't want to see the movies on both devices (iPad and TV)
b) I don't want to drain the iPad's battery

Any info?

if you enable tv out in the settings page at the mean time, the movie will not be showed in the device.

No video, just sound here also (AppleTV 2, iPad 3 with iOS 6). Enabling or desabling TV out doesn't change anything. Not very usefull to say the least. Also agree that AirPlay mirroring is not a solution. Using something else that work for the moment, even though its interface is not as good.

For third party app, currently can only use airplay mirroring mode, hope apple will open more in the future IOS update.

I've got the same problem: audio only and no video!
As already reported, airPlay mirroring mode is absolutely not a solution:
- first because I don't want to see the movies on both devices (iPhone and TV).
- then because I don't want to drain the iPhone's battery.
- finally, because the video resolution is not good: the video can not get full screen.
So what is the solution?

DEVICES :
- iPhone 5
- apple TV 3
- synology ds212j

No solution, currently only airplay mirroring is valid for non-native media formats.
