I have an Apple TV 2nd gen & tried both iPad & iPhone on ios 6.x to stream from airplayer. On both, I only get audio and not video on all sorts of different file types (including videos created on iDevices). I can only assume the latest Apple TV software has done something odd to the airplay format. I have not yet upgraded to ios 7. Anyone else had this problem & know a fix?

you need to open airplay mirroring in the task bar in iOS 6.x

I did not mention on the original post, but AirPlay mirroring failed to work. It just showed the standard Apple TV desktop. Any other suggestions?

airplay mirroring should be a feature of iOS, it should show the screen of your iPad. if you open airplay mirroring correctly.
