I can connect to the mediatomb UI with the browser, but Airplayer is unable to connect using the same
ip and port. Probably a simple problem, but I am stumped.

You mean add server manually?
you need to know the absolute address of the description file, not only the IP and port.

Yes, my wifi is on a different subnet from the mediatomb server, so airplayer is unable to automatically find the service. Do you mean the descriptor file for one of the media to be steamed or for where to find which are available?

No, it is device description file. maybe you can ask in mediatomb's support website. :-)

The mediatomb FAQ page says this, but given that other servers acan be contacted directly it does not make sense.

My UPnP player can not see MediaTomb, what is wrong?

Network related problems can be difficult to track, here are some most frequently encountered cases:

*
make sure that both, the player and the server are on the same subnet, otherwise UPnP will not work

I will try contacting the authors.

The UPnP protocol is defined in the a subnet. but if we know the device description file address, we can also add it successfully.
you can ask them for their server's "device description file addreess".
